May 1981, the eve of the French presidential election run-off. Claire, fifteen, is suffocating within her family. While her father darkly prophesies Russian tanks and five-year plans should the left come to power, Claire dreams of change and throws herself into supporting François Mitterrand. Marc, sixteen, son of a CGT garage worker, crosses her path. Against a backdrop of political sparring, they watch each other, drawn together and pushed apart…

Those who lived through that historic moment know exactly where they were and with whom, at precisely 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 1981, when the face of the new President of the Republic appeared line by line on television screens. (…) Anne Zinn-Justin excels at capturing the unique atmosphere of that election spring. (…)

The air seemed lighter, to paraphrase Barbara, in that beautiful month of May, and even though the hopes that had been raised eventually crashed against the relentless wall of reality (and money), they left a lasting impression on everyone's minds. This is what this charming coming-of-age novel hints at, in which a stifled youth awakens to breathe more freely.
